Reviving Tradition in Modern Dining: Han Shang Lou Restaurant

Hui Ye's Award-Winning Design Fuses Oriental Aesthetics with Modern Elements

Located on Phoenix Island in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, the Han Shang Lou restaurant is a testament to the successful integration of traditional Chinese aesthetics and modern design principles. Designed by Hui Ye, the restaurant offers a unique dining experience that combines color, aroma, taste, and appearance, reflecting the unique food culture of the Chaoshan people.

The restaurant's design stands out for its balance between traditional Chinese aesthetics and the use of modern materials. The interior is a blend of fiction and reality, neither overpowering nor plain. It is expressed through the integration of modern and oriental classical elements. The main materials used include natural stones, Viro woven rattans, RJ veneers, oak woods, black and pink-gold stainless steel, wired glass, and faux finishes.

The project, which covers an area of around 8000 sqm, began in May 2016 and was completed in December of the same year. Despite the tight schedule, the design team managed to create a three-story structure within a space of nine meters, necessitating the excavation of a basement and careful coordination of each floor's height.

The location of the restaurant, near a park, presented additional challenges. To harmonize with and protect the parkland, the designers adopted steel structures and combined elements of traditional Chinese architectures with modern design methods. The result is a structure that blends seamlessly with its surroundings while offering a unique dining experience.

The Han Shang Lou restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it's a celebration of food as a form of aesthetics. It provides a comfortable and elegant place for food lovers, becoming a way for people to enjoy life and design in a more direct way. This unique approach to restaurant design has earned the project a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019.

In conclusion, the Han Shang Lou restaurant is a shining example of how traditional aesthetics can be revived and integrated into modern design. Through careful consideration of the natural scenery and the unique food culture of the Chaoshan people, Hui Ye and his team have created a dining space that is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the palate.
